In celebrating the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther Kings, Jr. today, for Money Talks Money I would like to share a little known aspect of Dr. King's working philosophy of equality; Dr. King's five-lesson plan for the financial success of all people. Though well-documented and lovingly acclaimed for his role in civil rights, Dr. King had many other noteworthy accomplishments including a financial outlook for the entire nation. I would like to take the time to share his five lessons on this Money Talks Monday.

Lesson I: Don't Wait for Economic Change-Create It: instead of complaining about your financial situation, job, or state of the economy, look for creative ways you can personally change your own circumstances that might also be applicable to other across the nation.
Lesson II: Financial Freedom is Worth Fighting For: This is best summed up in King's quote, "There is nothing in the world greater than freedom. It is worth paying for; it is worth losing a job for; it is worth going to jail for. I would rather be a free pauper than a rich slave. I would rather die in abject poverty with my convictions than live in inordinate riches with the lack of self respect."
Lesson III: Sometimes You Need to Step Out On Faith and Take a Risk: Dr. King explained having faith and taking risks were necessary components to building wealth and managing one's finances.
Lesson IV: Your Education, Job, or Career Status Doesn't Define You: Dr. King's idea was to teach a message that one's individuality is more important to his or her self-worth than any other factor; though he did emphasize the importance of pursuing an education and earning a living, no matter how difficult or taxing a career may be.
Lesson V: Take Your Work Seriously: Dr. King's teachings, financial and otherwise, always stressed the importance of appreciating your work and being devoted to it as that was the best way to advance one's self.
What a wonderful day to honor one of the world's most preeminent civil rights leader and how grateful we all are for Dr. King's multitude of contributions to the betterment of life for all; even in the areas of personal and nation finance! #MissAmericaServes #NC #MoneyTalksMonday #MissMetrolina #MLKFinancialLesson
