How can we, as a family, save money around the house?

This is another question I get frequently when speaking about my platform. Over the next few weeks I will be answering that very questions through a series of tips beginning this week with one proved by the United States Department of Agriculture. One of the easiest to eliminate, yet most often considered a necessity, household expense is lawn maintenance. According to the Department of Agriculture the average household who has their lawn professionally or otherwise serviced spends an average of $80-$400 a month on landscaping. On the contrary, a household that performs their own lawn maintenance regularly spends only an average of $4-$55 a month to keep a nicely manicured lawn. The savings are astronomical and there are terrific benefits to maintaining your own lawn.

First, yard work is great for your physical health and that of your family. It is productive exercise done independently or jointly adding to overall health. Additionally, completing your own lawn maintenance puts you and yours in touch with your property and your home allowing you to see preventive measures you can take or minor repairs you need to make in the ground or home exterior to prevent future extensive or expensive damages and repairs. Furthermore, working in fresh air and sunlight helps to maintain the health of your skin. Believe it or not, people who spend an hour each week in motion outdoors have less problems with skin damage, discoloration, and experience improved skin quality and elasticity.

Needless to say, do it yourself lawn maintenance is very cost effective, healthy, and overall a great means of adding to the household budget. Could it be that money does actually grow on trees? It would seem very well possible. Join me next Monday for Money Talks Monday for more tips to shape up your household budget.
